Quality control problems with the Blu-Ray – A. Mullen – Great Plains, USA
Picked this up on Blu-Ray tonight. I had seen it several years ago and it’s one of my wife’s favorites, so we bought it at Mart du Wal for cheap. The original film story line and quality were very good for the budget and the actors turn in solid performances (Bill Paxton is a riot, and Lance Henriksen, Tim Thomerson, and Adrian Pasdar are personal faves). What I particularly liked: (1) This is a vampire movie where the term “vampire” isn’t used once and (2) vampirism in this wee corner of the cinematic universe is reversible: refreshing, if farfetched. Scoring and effects could have been better but, you know…

Anyway, about the Blu-Ray: The Lions Gate ‘Near Dark’ Blu-Ray has the distinction of being the first faulty Blu-Ray I’ve ever purchased – and I’ve purchased a few hundred at this point. Transfer quality did not appear to be much better than a decent DVD (I’m watching this through an Oppo BDP-483 onto a Samsung 62-inch DLP) and the worst part: there was an artifact line about 1/4 of the way down the screen that stayed on the screen for better than 90-percent of the picture. It was most noticeable during dark scenes (hey, we’re talking VAMPIRE movie here…). The artifact was a series of sporadic dots, all on one horizontal line. Not present in the preview, splash, special features, or menu screens, solely on the feature. Not good. Mine’s going back to Walmart for exchange. Hopefully the next one will be better. If it repeats, it goes back for refund and we’ll downgrade to DVD. Lions Gate, your BD production contractors have dissed you. An acceptable light twist on vampire fare, but watch the QC on the Blu-Ray.

Vampire Twist – mediocre quality – Dorian – NJ
I’ve always liked this Vampire movie and was looking forward to the HD resolution of BlueRay. Although the quality was a step better than standard, it was obvious that no attempt was made to re-master the original. The video was slightly grainy, but still better than a standard DVD. You’ll like Bill Paxton in an early role for him and everybody has to enjoy Lance Henrickson? Wait for a price reduction or a digitally remastered version.

The quality of this blu-ray is simply awful – Art Bay – San Francisco
This is one of my favorite b movies of all time. I was really looking forward to enjoying a blu-ray copy of this film. What a disappointment it was to realize that Lionsgate has released a simply terrible transfer of this terrific film. Just about all my regular DVD’s look better than this piece of junk. I only gave it 2 stars because the movie is terrific. Save your money and get it on dvd, for that matter a vhs would probably look as good as this piece of garbage. You have been warned.

Movie Great – Blu Ray VERY poor – William A. Cooper – Lutherville, MD USA
what is the person thinking saying this was a good transfer? This is THE worst looking blu-ray I have ever seen. I love the movie but like many others have said, this transfer leaves A LOT to be desired.

The Devil’s Rejects (Unrated) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers

If you are offended by the F-Bomb, disgusted by dead animals and unfathomable filth, frightened by the thoughts of a serial killer dressed as a clown ala John Wayne Gacy, or appalled at onscreen murder and torture, then this is not the movie for you.

A psychotic family on a secluded ranch are awaken one morning by a police raid led by acerbic small town Sheriff Rydell (Williams Forsythe). What the law will soon find is not only the tens of missing people, but also the results of the most heinous mass murdering spree in U.S. history. When Rydell only manages to capture the family matriarch – Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook) – his personal vendetta, which has a taken on Captain Ahab proportions, burns his desire for justice asunder.

The remaining family members are perhaps the most disturbed group of sociopathic killers ever. Led by foul mouthed father Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), a quick-witted pervert who paints his face like a clown; the other two are brother Otis (Bill Moseley), a wraith-like psychopath with grungy hair (he looks like a Rob Zombie album cover); and sister Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie), a blonde bombshell who disarms with her beauty and surprises with her sadism. The trio wreaks havoc upon all they encounter, and abuse the world about them without remorse or hesitation. When Sheriff Rydell enlists the help of criminal mercenaries – played brilliantly by the duo of Danny Trejo and Diamond Dallas Page – the explosive situation runs its course in a heart-stopping finale.

Everything is near perfection, and Devil’s Rejects has the feel of an older horror movie. With one Texas Chainsaw Massacre homage after another, there is definite respect paid to 70s and 80s horror (i.e. several unnecessary T&A shots, stupid people die, over-the-top sadism). Even Michael Berryman, original creepy bald guy from The Hills Have Eyes, makes an appearance as a pimp’s right-hand man. The pacing of the movie falls right in line with theme, even providing a few freeze-frames mixed in so viewers can absorb the carnage. The blood and gore are all present, and just enough to satisfy the gorehound. The acting is top notch, believable, and downright scary. The lengths to which Haig, Moseley, and Zombie go to make everyone loathe them is outstanding; in their attempts at evil and wickedness, they are admirable.

Credit goes to Rob Zombie for making a captivating tale of evil, and for a creation that not only resembles the work of Tarantino, but rivals it as well. Highly recommended for the demented – one of the best horror movies of the past several years. Check Special Price!

The Devil’s Rejects – J. Lindner – Gem Lake, MN United States
This probably should be renamed “Hollywood’s Rejects” since none of these actors or anyone else associated with this film will ever be on the stage receiving an Acadamy Award. All this film is is a bloodbath of violence and gore, surrounded by bad language. But first and foremost its full of really bad movie making. Who would right trash like this? Only in a society that pays money to watch this junk.

These three family members, a father who likes to paint himself to be a clown and his two offspring go on a killing spree. They catch the attention of a misguided lawman who wants to hunt them down for his own self glorification. This makes the people of west Texas to look like a bunch of morons. Oddly enough, the devil himself seems to make a cameo appearance to rescue goofy dad and odd duck son from a burning house, to which he later returns. People get shot a lot in this film. If the person is a victim of this bloodthirsty gang, they die. But if one of the family members get shot, and I believe all of them do at one point or another, the bullet doesn’t seem to faze them. Even nailing the hands of one to a chair isn’t enough to prevent him from later grabbing hold of the steering wheel of a car for the final scene. And the final scene is just a rip off of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

This movie is a huge waste of time and money. I suggest a trip to the Baghdad market if you want to see violence of this calibre.

Preeminent Tale of Debauchery and Gore – JBGood – Lansdale USA
If you enjoy well-done horror drama, big on revenge and that leave little to the immagination, it doesn’t get any better than Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects, the sequel to 2002′s House of 1,000 Corpses. Served up to the viewer are gruesome depictions of depravity including a girl getting flattened by a speeding tractor trailer, a guy getting nailed to a chair, torture by cattle prod, and assorted graphic stabbings. Its all here, rolled into the murderous tale of a Manson-like family of low lifes in the desolate California hills, led by Gacy-like clown character, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig), and husband-wife psycho duo Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie, all specialists in abducting, torturing, and killing strangers. The pigs head at the property entrance brings to mind the Canadian pig farmer serial killings a few years back. The local sheriff, convincingly played by William Forsythe, makes an armed attack on the clan’s farm that is less than successful, and decides to apply his own brand of barbaric justice to the psychopaths.

This underated film gets high marks for directing and editing, quite amazing since it was completed in 30 days. The women in the movie are attracive and vulnerable, and there’s tasteful nudity to go along with the mayhem. Acting throughout is surprisingly good for such a brutal, sadistic movie. Because of its more realistic portrayal of violence, it is leaps above comparatively, pablum-based offerings of the past like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saw, Motel Hell, etc.

Hardrock tracks by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Terry Reid, Joe Walsh, and others add familiarity and a hip quality to the movie. I liked the use of “Freebird” in the latter part of the movie with the bloodied killers cruising in a big blue caddy in the California landscape. Special features include comments by director and cast, and deleted scenes that easily could have been left in, but then this gorefest may have exceeded two hours. The Blu-ray PQ is excellent on a 1080p plasma TV.

This movie is twisted – Jennifer’s Amazon –
My husband is a HUGE horror flick guy, I personally think this movie should be made for devil worship, but if you like scary and twisted movies, this is it.

My Bloody Valentine (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Reviews By Customers

Wow, this is a really great looking BD. For those who don’t know: After many years this movie can now be seen in it’s original unrated Version, sure you will notice that the new integrated scenes are not of the same quality, but what the hell, now they are here and this moves “My Bloody Valentine” from a sleeping pill to a really good slasher movie. Important for those in Europe: The BD is codefree, so come and get some of this great 80′s feeling again. Check Special Price!

Do not buy! – J. Stotts –
The transfer is great, however, the film on blu ray is missing the scene where the girl gets thrown up on the water post after the clothes start falling down. I wonder if all copies miss this scene.

Disappointing – N. Durham – Philadelphia, PA
Pulp/horror writer Jack Ketchum adapts his own novel for Offspring, an interesting entry of sorts in this year’s Ghost House Underground lineup. Offspring the novel, was actually a sequel to Off Season, which would have been a more logical adaptation in the first place, but nevermind that for now. Anyway, there’s a clan of cannibal kids terrorizing the community, and seeking a fresh baby as well. Hounding them is a retired cop (Art Hindle) while everyone else involved gets chomped, slaughtered, and gutted; and the film makes no apologies for its tone and unsettling gore. Still though, besides some decent gore effects, Offspring features some atrocious acting from pretty much everyone involved (the cannibals in particular are so bad you can’t help but laugh), and Ketchum’s own screenplay doesn’t help matters here either, and ends up being a shell of its source material. All in all, Offspring is worth a look just based on its disturbed content alone, but in the end, this Ketchum adaptation is a disappointment.
